First stop of the trip was the Bonanza Saltpans, where the Kentish Plovers (Charadrius alexandrinus) were trying to get in the car before we had even left Sanlucar behind properly. Much more was to follow and lingering here to enjoy the birds got us one of the birds of the trip. Black Kites (Milvus migrans) and Booted Eagles (Hieraaetus pennatus) were up above the DoƱana woodland on the far side of the river in numbers and we were scanning regularly on the offchance of something else popping up. Before long Will said he had a large 'something' in his scope and we were soon all on a large Aquila eagle soaring on very slightly raised wings. The only one likely candidate in the area is Spanish Imperial Eagle (Aquila adalberti) and a bit longer watching, plus confirmation from an extremely helpful and friendly local birder, convinced us we were watching one of the birds of the trip.
